Tom Popyk is an award-winning freelance “backpack” broadcaster, with experience covering major international conflicts for more than fifteen years.

His extensive front-line reportage and informed analysis has been featured on CBS Network Radio and TV, CBC National TV and Radio, CTV National News, Global Television, DW-TV (Deutsche Welle), Corus Radio, ABC Radio, BBC Wales, Canadian Press, and People Magazine.

As the Mideast and South Asia Correspondent for Global TV (Canada) he covered the war in Afghanistan, the Arab spring revolutions in Tahrir and Tripoli,  and was one of the few reporters to report on the Somali 2011 famine from within that country. Living almost two years in Iraq, he covered the US invasion, Falluja and Najaf campaigns, Abu Ghraib, major bombings, the Anbar insurgency, and on going political developments. He was the lone Canadian broadcaster to cover the capture of Saddam Hussein. For ABC News, he delivered a world exclusive video and reportage on the Nov. 2003 resumption of U.S. bombings in Iraq.

In Canada, he has produced for two seasons of CTV’s Gemini award-winning investigative newsmagazine W-Five, written for Canada’s top rated CTV National News, and reported for local news affiliate CTV Vancouver.
